How to Get Started with External Link Building for your Business
External link building is an important component to your SEO strategy. It helps increase your Domain Authority and helps Google recognise the importance of your site and your business and ultimately help you rank better on Google.
External link building can be time consuming and not all links are created equal. When looking at websites that you would like to partner with it is important to take into consideration their Domain Authority and their impact on Google. In an ideal world you want websites with a higher ranking to link to yours.
So how do you go about getting these external links?
- You start by creating a good content stream that people want to link back too. The more quality content that you produce the better chance people will pick it up and share it on their website.
- Submit any news worthy content to press releases and directories to see if they will link back to you.
- Get reviews from influential people and companies and ask them to talk about you on their website and social media.
- Ask people you work with to link back to your site. After all if you don’t ask you don’t get. However, being on a page with a list of suppliers along with other links has less value than being on a page within which you are the only link.
- Examine your competitors backlink profile to see if there are any good websites that you can approach to get a link on.
Of course all of this does take a lot of time and is reliant on external forces helping you out. I would highly recommend NOT paying for external link building as this is often penalised by Google however getting help from someone to build organic links for you is a much better way forward.
There are a few key things that you should consider before you start pushing this content out:
A. Anchor Text: this is the text that sits underneath the hyperlink to your website. This helps google understand what your website is about which is why for example you do not want to rank for ‘click here’ you want to rank for a key traffic driver.
B. Page the link is aimed at: It is important to send people to a page that is relevant to what they have clicked on. If this is a specific page on your site then make sure you are sending them there. This will also help that page rank better on Google and give it more authority.
C. Nofollow and Dofollow links: for SEO you want to have Dofollow links so that google can see them. A Nofollow link means that google effectively doesn’t even see it.
Unfortunately this is not something you can simply do and then forget about it. Google takes into consideration the freshness of the links so you need to be continually building new links to help advance your ranking.
